北山にたなびく雲の青雲は、星から離れてゆき、月を離れていった。

天武天皇が崩御した際に皇后(後の持統天皇)が詠んだ歌。「神山にたなびく雲」は、逝去した天武天皇を表しているのだろう。天武天皇は、律令国家の建設を強力に推進し、藤原京の建設、律令の制定、国史「日本書紀」の編纂にも着手した。占星術にも精通していたといわれており、天武天皇を偲び、持統天皇がこの歌に星を詠んだと思われる。
This poem was composed by the Empress (later Empress Jito) upon the death of Emperor Tenmu. “The clouds drifting over the mountains northern” likely refers to the late Emperor Tenmu. Emperor Tenmu strongly promoted the construction of a ritsuryo state, and also began the construction of Fujiwara-kyo, the establishment of ritsuryo codes, and the compilation of the national history, the Nihon Shoki. He was also said to have been well versed in astrology, and it is thought that Empress Jito incorporated the stars into this poem in memory of Emperor Tenmu.
