大和道(ﾔﾏﾄﾁﾞ)は 雲隠(ｸﾓｶﾞｸ)りたり 然(ｼｶ)れども 我(ｱ)が振る袖を 無礼(ﾅﾒｼ)と思ふな
右は、大宰帥大伴卿(ｷｮｳ)の大納言を兼任して、京に向ひて上道す。この日馬を水城に駐めて、府家を顧み望む。時に、卿を送る府吏の中に、遊行女婦あり。その字を児島と曰ふ。ここに娘子、この別るることの易きを傷み、その会ふことの難きを嘆き、涕を拭ひて、みづから袖を振る歌を吟へり。

(現代語訳) 大和道(ﾔﾏﾄﾁﾞ)は、雲の彼方です。雲隠れて目にふれずとも、どうか私が振る袖を無礼とお思いにならないでください。
右は大宰府の長官たる大伴卿が大納言を兼任して京に向かって出発した。その日馬を水城にとめて大宰府の館を振り返ってみた。その日、卿を送る役人に混じって遊女がいて、その名を児島といった。その時、遊女は、別れが易くは再会の難いことを嘆き、涙をふいて、自ら袖を振る歌を口ずさんだ。

(Note) The Lord, Otomo, Head of Dazaifu departed to Kyoto as Dainagon, chief councillor of state, as additional position. Then, he looked back to Dazaifu Palace, stationing his riding horse at Mizuki. There among the officials sending him off was a prostitute called Koshima. She lamented the ease of separation and difficulty of reunion and sung the poem to herself waving her sleeve.
