As I send my dear to Yamato, the darker the night has grown,

(題詞) 大津皇子(ｵｵﾂﾉﾐｺ)がひそかに伊勢神宮に下り、帰ってくる来る時に、大伯皇女(ｵｵｸﾉﾋﾒﾐｺ)が作られた歌二首
あの人(弟・大津皇子)を大和に見送ろうとすると、夜も更けて、やがて明方の露にわたしは立ち濡れたことであった。
(Epigraph) Two poems composed by Princess Oku when Prince Otsu secretly went down to Ise Shrine and returned.
As I send my dear to Yamato, the darker the night has grown,
Then I am soaked by the dew at dawn.
謀反の疑いをかけらた大津皇子は大和から、伊勢神宮に、姉の大伯皇女に会いに来た。しかし、彼女には成す術がなく、弟の先行きへの強い不安を感じ大和へ見送った。その後、謀反の意有りとされ、自宅で自害することになる。そのような切羽詰まった状況で詠まれた歌。「立ち濡れし」に自らの無力感があらわれている。
Prince Otsu, suspected of treason, came from Yamato to Ise Shrine to visit his sister, Princess Otsu. However, there was nothing she could do, and feeling deeply anxious about her brother’s future, she sent him off to Yamato. Later, accused of plotting treason, he committed suicide at home. This poem was composed in such a desperate situation. “Tachi nureshi” (standing wet) expresses her own sense of powerlessness.
