風が吹くことにさえに恋い焦がれるとは羨ましいことです。風が吹いただけで恋する人が来たのでは、と待つことができるのなら、何を嘆くことがあるでしょう。(私は、あの方をもう待つことさえできないのですから。)

額田王が詠んだ「君待つとあが恋ひ居ればわがやどの簾動かし秋の風吹く」(488)に、姉である鏡王女が応えた一首。恋人を待つことさえできない私に比べて、秋の風で簾が動くだけで恋人が来たのではと思えるあなたは何も嘆くことはないではないですか、という嘆きとも皮肉ともとれる内容だ。ここでの恋人は天智天皇か？
This poem is a response from Kagami no Okimi to Nukata no Okimi’s poem, “As I wait for you and yearn for you, The autumn wind blows, stirring the blinds of my house, or you?”(488). The poem can be interpreted as both a lament and an irony to mean “I cannot even wait for my lover, but you, who, when the autumn wind blows, think that your lover has arrived, have nothing to lament.” Is the lover in this case Emperor Tenchi?
