Apparently our great lord, who rules over the entire land, will see it in the evening, and visit in the morning. Will he visit the yellow leaves of Mount Kamidake again today? Will he see it again tomorrow? Gazing at the mountain in the distance, I feel unbearably sad as dusk approaches, and as dawn breaks I spend the day in loneliness, the sleeves of my sackcloth mourning clothes never drying from my tears.

天皇が崩御された時に、大后が作られた歌一首
あまねく国土をお治めになるわが大君が、夕べには御覧になるらしい、朝には訪れられるらしい。神岳の黄葉を今日もお訪ねになるだろうか。明日もまた御覧になるだろうか。私は、その山を遠く望みながら夕暮になるとたまらなく悲しく、夜が明けると寂しく一日をすごし、荒布の喪服の袖は涙で乾くまもない。
