I remember the temporary huts in Uji where I stayed,
Thatched by the reeds from the autumn fields harvested.
額田王(ﾇｶﾀﾉｵﾎｷﾐ)の歌 未だ詳(ﾂﾏﾋﾞ)らかならず
秋の野の み草刈り葺(ﾌ)き 宿れりし 宇治(ｳﾁﾞ)のみやこの 仮廬(ｶﾘｲﾎ)し思(ｵﾓ)ほゆ
右は、山上憶良大夫の類聚歌林を検ふるに曰はく「一書に戊申の年、比良の宮に幸すときの大御歌」といへり。ただ、紀に曰はく「五年の春、正月己卯の朔の辛巳、天皇、紀の温湯より至ります。三月戊寅の朔、天皇吉野の宮に幸して肆宴す。庚辰の日、天皇近江の平の浦に幸す」といへり。

秋の野の萱(ｶﾔ)を刈りとって来て、屋根に葺(ﾌ)いて、旅宿りをした、あの宇治の都の仮の庵が思われる
右の歌は、山上憶良大夫の類聚歌林を調査すると、この歌は「一書に、戊申の年に天皇が比良の宮に行幸された際に詠まれた名歌」と記されている。しかし、『日本書紀』には「5年の春、正月己卯の朔の辛巳、天皇は紀の湯より来られ、三月戊寅の朔に吉野の宮に行幸され、宴を催された。庚辰の日、天皇は近江の平野浦に行幸された」と記されている。

Examining the Ruijukarin by Yamanoue Okura no Daifu, it was found that the above poem was refered to as “a great poem sung when the Emperor visited Hira Palace in the year of Boshin, according to one book.” However, the Nihon Shoki states, “In the spring of the fifth year, on the first day of the first month of the year, the year of the Rabbit, the Empress arrived from the hot springs of Ki. On the first day of the third month, the year of the Tiger, the Empress visited Yoshino Palace and held a banquet. On the day of the year of the Rabbit, the Emperor visited Hiranoura in Omi.”

額田王(ﾇｶﾀﾉｵﾎｷﾐ; 生没年不詳)は、万葉集の代表的歌人の一人。最初は大海人皇子(ｵﾎｱﾏﾉﾐｺ:後の天武天皇)に嫁ぎ、後に中大兄皇子(ﾅｶﾉｵﾎｴﾉﾐｺ; 後の天智天皇)に仕えた。采女(ｳﾈﾒ)や巫女(ﾐｺ)だったのでは、とする説もある。額田王は、日本書記に「天皇(天武天皇)、初め鏡王(ｶｶﾞﾐﾉｵﾎｷﾐ)の娘、額田王をめして、十市皇女(ﾄｦﾁﾉﾋﾒﾐｺ)を生しませり。」とある。また、藤原鎌足(ﾌｼﾞﾜﾗﾉｶﾏﾀﾘ)に嫁いだ鏡女王(ｶｶﾞﾐｵｵﾎｷﾐ)の妹ではないかとの説もあるが、結局のところ不明である。日本書記の簡単な記述を除けば、万葉集にだけ登場し、詳細不詳で謎めいているがゆえに、より魅力的に映るのかもしれない。
Nukata no Okimi (dates of birth and death unknown) is one of the most prominent poets in the Manyoshu. She first married Prince Oama (later Emperor Tenmu) and later served Prince Naka no Oe (later Emperor Tenji). Some theories suggest she may have been a court lady or shrine maiden (medium). The Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan) states that “The Emperor (Emperor Tenmu) first married Nukata no Okimi, daughter of Kagami no Ohokimi, and gave birth to Princess Tochi no Hime-miko.” There is also a theory that she may have been the younger sister of Princess Kagami (Kagami no Okimi), who married Fujiwara no Kamatari, but ultimately, this remains unknown. Apart from a brief mention in the Nihon Shoki, it only appears in the Manyoshu, and the details are unknown and mysterious, which may make her even more fascinating.
