I will cut the Japanese andromeda growing by the shore,
And show it to you, not in this world any more.

右の一首は、今案(ｶﾑｶﾞ)ふるに、移し葬(ﾊﾌﾞ)る歌に似ず。けだし疑はくは、伊勢神宮(ｲｾﾉｶﾑﾐﾔ)より京に還(ｶﾍ)りしときに路(ﾐﾁ)の上(ﾍ)に花を見て、感傷哀咽(ｱｲｴﾂ)して、この歌を作るか。
(現代語訳)
右の一首は、今考えてみると、移葬の時の歌らしくない。もしかすると、伊勢神宮から京に還る時に、路の上に花を見て、感傷哀咽して、この歌を作ったのかもしれない。
磯のほとりに、生えているあしび(馬酔木)を、手折って、思わず花を見せたいと思うけれども、見せるべきあなたがいるわけではないのに。
