四(ﾖ)つの舟(ﾌﾈ) はや帰り来(ｺ)と しらか付け 朕(ﾜ)が裳(ﾓ)の裾(ｽｿ)に 斎(ｲﾊ)ひて待たむ
(注) 右は、勅使を発遣し、并(ｱﾜ)せて酒を賜ふ。楽宴(ﾗｸｴﾝ)の日月未(ｲﾏ)だ詳審(ﾂﾏﾋﾞﾗｶ)にするを得ず

四隻の船が早く帰るようにと、しらか(白香; 神事にもちいられた白、麻などの繊維を束ねたもの)をつけて、わが裳の裾に斎いて(まじないをして無事を祈って)待とう。
(注) 右は、勅使を遣し、あわせて酒を賜わった。宴会をした日月は明らかにできない。

遣唐使は、当時の船が脆弱、航海技術も未熟、賊の脅威、病気の蔓延、悪天候や座礁など、多くの危険が伴う命がけの旅だった。帰国できず、唐で生涯を終えることになった遣唐使も多く阿倍仲麻呂もその一人。孝謙天皇は、遣唐使の安全、無事の帰国を神に祈ったのだ。
The journey of the envoys to Tang China was a life-risking one, fraught with dangers such as the fragile ships of the time, immature navigational technology, the threat of thieves, the spread of disease, bad weather, and stranding. Many envoys were unable to return home and ended their lives in Tang China, including Abe no Nakamaro. Empress Koken prayed to the deities for the safety of the envoys and their safe return home.
