いつ来ても よふけて四方の 長ばなし 赤良(ｱｶﾗ)さまにも 申されもせず
よみびとしらず
Every time I come, his square talk is too long to endure till late at night.
Yet, I cannot overtly say so to him straight.

南畝が招かれた先でしたたか酒を飲みながいをして、帰ろうとしたら、自分の刀にこんな歌が書かれた短冊があったとか。これを発表した南畝の自虐パロディ。
Often Nanpo was invited to drinking parties. At one time, when he was about to come home late at night, he found a piece of paper with the above Kyoka written perhaps by a servant there. He rather made it public, as his self-deprecation parody.
(注) 狂歌(きょうか)とは、風刺、皮肉、しゃれ、滑稽を盛り込んだ5-7-5-7-7形式の短歌。
Note: Kyoka is satirical, ironical or comical short Japanese poem, derived from Tanka, composed of 31 syllables, with a pattern of 5-7-5-7-7 sounds.
