ぼうだら*に なりて海辺を ながむれば 月影さむし 宵(ﾖｲ)の口塩**

When I enjoyed myself at Bodara* in Suzaki, looking at the moon, in the winter night.
Looking at the Suzaki seacoast, under the cold moonlight shinning,
I got dead drunk, early in the evening, the salt on my lips bitter tasting.

* 望汰欄(ﾎﾞｳﾀﾞﾗ)－洲崎にあった料亭; ぼうだら－棒鱈; 真鱈を使った素干(ｽﾎﾞｼ)
Bodara – a restaurant in Suzaki, Fukawaga; dried codfish soaked in water for few days
** 口塩－料理屋などの入口に盛られた塩
Kuchisio－salt heaped up on the doorstep of a restaurant to ward off evil

棒鱈、望汰欄、口塩、宵の口、(唇)さむし、など同音異義語、音の組み合わせによる多義を巧みに使った。
Making well use of homonyms directly or indirectly such as bodara (dried codfish), kuchishio (salt on the lips), yoinokuchi (early in the evening) , samushi (cold).
(注) 狂歌(きょうか)とは、風刺、皮肉、しゃれ、 滑稽を盛り込んだ5-7-5-7-7形式の短歌。江戸時代後期(18世紀後半)に隆盛し、天明狂歌として黄金期を迎える。大田南畝(蜀山人 ｼｮｸｻﾝｼﾞﾝ; 1749-1823)は、その代表的文人、狂歌師。
Note: Kyoka is satirical, ironical or comical short Japanese poem, derived from Tanka, composed of 31 syllables, with a pattern of 5-7-5-7-7 sounds. It flourished and marked a golden age in the late Edo period in the late 18th century as Tenmei Kyoka. Ota Nampo, Shokusanjin (1749-1823), is one of the leading Kyoka poets.
